Mapex | Black Panther BLASTERBPML3700NWU Build The Blaster is the only Panther with internal reinforcing rings. It has a 13"x7" shell which is 5.1mm of maple with 3.4mm internal rings of walnut. These thin rings extend about 4cm into the shell top and bottom. In terms of support they certainly work - the review shell was almost perfectly round, despite being thin.
The 45-degree bearing edges slope up to a not-too-sharp smooth-over on the outer ply. As with all the Panther edges they're even and well executed. The shell is finished in a two-tone transparent brown fade stain and gloss lacquer.
Hands on Bored with 14" snares? Then why not change your sound to this 13"x7"? Decreasing the diameter while increasing the depth gives the drum a different tonal dynamic. It's just as powerful as a 14" but has that little bit more edge, allied to depth.Because of the depth the drum suits slightly higher tuning when it delivers maximum bite. But we actually preferred it at mid tuning, when it was fat and creamy, the combination of maple and walnut with the vintage build giving it a marvelously musical tone.
Big in every sense, the 14"x7" Phatbob has a fat shell consisting of 12mm of 100 percent maple ply. It also has a couple of vintage style features. First, it's the only drum in the Panther range which has rounded profile bearing edges, which Mapex dubs 8:2. And second, whereas the snare bed dips on the other wood drums are shallow, on this drum the beds are cut deeper, so you really can't miss them.
The drum is finished in ominous black stain lacquer with matching black hardware.
Hands on Everything works to give Phat Bob a big sound. The thick shell elevates the pitch and potential volume, while the rounded bearing edges soften the impact a little, fattening up the tone. The relatively deep snare beds help the snares to lie flat and tight to the head, further thickening the snare response.You appreciate the extra fine sensitivity of the new Panther snare strainer. The overall feeling as you lay in is one of solidity and gravitas, a sense of confidence, no matter what sort of music you play.
The cheapest Panther, the Blade is no more shabby for that. The 14"x5 1/2", 1mm steel shell has a just-visible internal vertical join and turned-over traditional 45 degree bearing edges.
The shell and all the hardware are finished in a brushed metallic grey, giving the drum a more expensive image. It was also exactly round by our measurements.
Hands onSteel may be the low-cost option but it is a splendid material for snare drum shells. At medium tension you get a dry, dark, thick and parchment-like tone in the centre, but when you catch the rim it rings out like a - well, like a steel drum.
The timbre is not as varied or complex as maple, say, but crunchier, so your double strokes are distinct and keen.
The shell matches perfectly with the new Sonic Saver hoops and rim shots and cross-sticks are a joy, cutting through with ease. That distinctive steel ping is what you need to power just about any band.
